What are the documents required to ride an electric scooter?

In India, there has always been confusion regarding rules and regulations for driving electric vehicles.  It’s really a challenging affair to keep track of the constant changes in the laws and regulations. The government of India has done a great job by making the rules and regulations simplified ,more people-friendly, and encouraging the use of electric vehicles instead of traditional fuel-based ones.  Here we are going to discuss the rules regarding the usage of electric vehicles.

 

Requirements for the registration of an electric scooter:

  1. Address proof that you need to have (any of the following):
  • Voter card
  • Aadhar card
  • Water bill
  • Bank statement
  • Telephone bill
  • LIC policy
  • Passport

 

  1. Identity proof:
  • Aadhar card
  • Pan card
  • Voter ID card
  • Driving license

 

Along with all the documents mentioned above, all electric vehicles need to have the approval from Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).

Is a driving license required for driving an electric scooter?

When it comes to operating any kind of motor vehicle, you must need a driving license. Without a driving license, it is illegal to drive any kind of motor vehicle.

However, your electric scooter has a maximum speed of 25 kmph and power up to 250 watts, you don’t have a driving license to ride it. Students, teenagers, and retirees can use such electric scooters as they don’t need any registration.

Is a number plate required for an electric scooter?

According to Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, every vehicle after 1st April, 2019 must have HSRP (High-Security Registration Plate). Only government motor vehicle offices can provide this particular registration so that our government can have the clear database of all the vehicles and prevent theft.

 

  • Private vehicles must have a number plate with white background and black letters
  • Commercial vehicles must have a number plate with yellow background and black letters
  • Rented vehicles must have number plate with black background and yellow letters
  • Private electric vehicles must have a green background and white lettering
  • Commercial electric vehicles must have a number plate with green background and yellow letters

 

Registration fee for electric vehicles in India:

To encourage more usage of electric scooters in India, The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has recently exempted electric scooters from paying any registration fees. For the electric scooter owners in India, the good thing is that they don’t have to pay anything for insurance and yearly renewal for their vehicles. The government has also exempted electric vehicle owners from paying road taxes.
