The Rise of Delivery Services: How to Make Money as a Driver

There are numerous gig apps available these days for making extra money on the side. Many of these gigs involve driving apps that transport people or food to various locations. If you don’t want to deliver food or people through a service like DoorDash or UberEats, you may believe you’re out of options.

The good news is that you can deliver packages for money using various peer-to-peer delivery apps. And some of these side hustles pay significantly more than most delivery apps. This list of the best peer-to-peer shipping apps is for you if you want to make money delivering packages.

  1. Roadie

Roadies are one of the most popular ways for side hustlers and full-timers to transport items for money. It also allows drivers to earn money by making local or long-distance deliveries. On Roadie, drivers can earn up to $60 for local deliveries and $650 for road trips, and the application process is simple.

According to Indeed, Roadie drivers earn an average of $23 per hour, so if Roadie is popular in your city, this is an excellent way to supplement your income by delivering packages in your spare time!

To become a Roadie driver, you must be at least 18 years old, have a Social Security number, and a valid driver’s licence. You must also maintain a four-star rating based on customer feedback. At the moment, Roadie has no minimum vehicle requirements.

Hourly pay ranges from $15 to $23 per hour on average.

  1. Amazon Flex

Without adding Amazon Flex, a discussion on how to earn money delivering packages would be lacking. Amazon Flex is probably one of the best delivery options out there if you want to be your own boss, set your own hours, and deliver packages for this eCommerce giant. Amazon Flex drivers deliver Amazon.com, Amazon Fresh/Pantry, and local business packages to people in their community.

The length of a block depends on a few factors, such as the type of delivery (Prime, Amazon Fresh, or regular orders), but most shifts are either 2-4 hours or 3-6 hours. According to Amazon, drivers earn between $18 and $25 per hour. This means that a single Amazon Flex block could earn you $100 or more.

Every Tuesday and Friday, Amazon Flex pays drivers via direct deposit. According to Indeed, Amazon Flex drivers earn an average of $20 per hour. Just keep in mind that Amazon Flex driver requirements are quite strict, and different delivery types have different requirements. To learn more, I recommend reading the Amazon Flex FAQ. Furthermore, because Amazon Flex does not consistently hire in every city, it is not always easy to get started driving.

Hourly pay ranges from $15 to $23 per hour on average.

  1. GoShare

If you want to earn money by delivering packages with a pickup truck, box truck, or cargo van, GoShare could be the platform for you. Once you become a driver, earning money on GoShare is simple. You are notified of ‘Projects’ in your area that you qualify for based on your vehicle, and you can accept or decline any jobs that interest you. Payments are deposited into your account after you complete a delivery, and you can withdraw your balance to your bank account every week.

GoShare definitely lends itself well to couriers with larger vehicles, as you can earn up to $71.50 per hour on average if you have a box truck.

You are free to establish your own hours, and GoShare drivers are fully insured with cargo and liability coverage. Drivers for GoShare must be 18 years old or older, pass a background check, speak English, have a valid license/insurance, and drive a vehicle that is older than 2004 and meets their requirements.

According to GoShare, hourly pay ranges from $33 to $71.50 per hour depending on vehicle type.

  1. ParaWorks

ParaWorks, a new gig work platform from the Para app, is one new way to get paid to deliver packages. When other delivery apps are slow, delivery drivers can use ParaWorks to find high-paying gigs in their area. And, best of all, you know exactly how much each gig pays before you accept it.

I also like ParaWorks because it has a variety of jobs you can complete, such as delivering:

  • Groceries
  • Retail
  • Large catering orders

Some jobs are also shift-based, so you may have to deliver more than one package. However, ParaWorks also offers one-time gigs for quick cash. According to ParaWorks, the average hourly wage is $25, which is higher than the pay of many popular gig apps such as DoorDash or Amazon Flex. You are also paid weekly, and ParaWorks is expanding to new markets, so sign up to be notified when it is available in your area.

According to the ParaWorks website, hourly pay is $25 on average.

  1. CitizenShipper

CitizenShipper is a reputable P2P delivery marketplace where 9,000+ drivers have already completed and been paid for over 84,000 shipments. It’s also one of the best ways to make money delivering packages if you don’t mind driving across multiple states or over long distances in general.

CitizenShipper facilitates payments between Buyer and Shipper, and the platform costs $24.99 per month after your three-month free trial. However, if you are willing to hustle, the bidding system can lead to a lot of opportunities.

This is especially true for long-distance deliveries that cross multiple cities or states. Just look at these CitizenShipper pet delivery gigs, where you can earn nearly $1,000 for delivering a pet to someone!

Of course, you don’t want to drive 2,000 miles just to make $950. However, if you have a planned road trip or frequently travel for work, earning money with CitizenShipper on the side is a wise decision. Transporters must pass a background check, but other than that, all they need is a valid licence and insurance.

Hourly pay varies greatly between jobs; according to CitizenShipper, top drivers earn between $8,000 and $10,000 per month if they complete 15 to 20 shipments but pay 30% to 40% in expenses.
